15 April 16 Meet John.

With a wealth of experience in Australia and the UK, John Broadfoot has worked with a wide variety of organisations to deliver designs that create great experiences and aesthetics.

John loves nothing more than getting into the ‘why’ of a client brief, using lots of his grey matter and a couple of grey leads to brainstorm different solutions pre-pixel.

He believes that a key part of delivering great digital experiences is understanding both what the client wants, and what their audience is hoping to achieve.

John has worked with brands including McLaren F1, the Brazil National Football Team, Vitamix, Ben Sherman and Fabletics.

When he’s not designing digital interfaces, John loves to travel, play 5-a-side soccer and make short films.

We sat down to see what makes him tick.

If you won the lottery would you still work? What would you do?

I think I would travel-work for as long as possible, and in doing so hopefully meet some interesting people. I’d try to document the whole experience and find a creative way to share all of the stories. I might have to purchase a holiday house along the way too, for when I venture over towards the Mediterranean…

If you could meet one artist (past or present), who would it be and what’s the one question you would ask him or her?

I recently went to an exhibition in London showcasing photographer Burt Glinn – he was present with a lens during the Cuban Revolution in 1959. He had unrestricted access throughout Havana and managed to adopt this incredible, intimate perspective. I’d love to ask him what that experience was like and whether he realised at the time that he was witnessing a moment in history. After seeing his amazing photographs, I imagine the stories would have been even better.

What’s one website you can’t go a day without checking?

There are a few… Behance, Awwwards, Site Inspire, Typewolf. I love being inspired by the incredible work that’s produced by the creative community, all over the world. It’s always a good start to the day!

What’s one of your favourite things about Melbourne?

Dumplings. They’re everywhere!

What makes a good designer?

A solid understanding of the fundamentals, an amazing eye for detail and of course a great imagination!

What are you expecting to see in digital design trends this year?

I’m curious to see what happens in the VR world. Now that several devices are on the way it will be interesting to see how they fit into our everyday lives. It’s kind of scary but definitely intriguing at the same time!

What is one skill in the world of digital you hope to improve this year?

Digital animation.

And lastly, if you met an alien, what would you say?

Did George Lucas get it all right?!
